Beaddicted!
July 1, 2009
I have found a new hobby!!
The word “beading” has actually teased me about a year ago, when my good friend Masako said she was doing it. (And later on she even sent few of her work to me and my daughter as a gift. Bless!) I wasn’t sure I had the patience to do what she was doing.
But then, I was looking around the shop and saw the seed beads in many colours.. and that, where it started. Having no idea of what to do, it was so little of what I could do with just the seed beads. Bought some tiger tail, clasps, crimps and so on and all I could do was just a simple necklace and bracelet. Cute but too simple. I’ve had enough!
Then few trips to library and browsing around some more books and websites really widened my horizon about beading. There are few kinds. And beading the small seeds just wasn’t what I had in mind!
The first book that really got me going was the book by Maya Brenner. Her works are just beautiful. I kept the book for 6 weeks just to have a look at her creation and the “how to”. She made it look so easy. But even after I bought the kit and everything, I couldn’t even make a simple loop look nice. And then I decided to take some classes.
What a transformation! I don’t know what it is about ‘taking the class’ for doing something, but obviously, I did a lot better by taking it!!
The first class only taught me how to make a lariat. It was simple, didn’t include any loops but still fun. The second sent me a bit further with the wire! I was rather intrigued by wire work. They look complicated but they’re actually not. You can play with your imagination to work with them. I loved it!! I pricked a finger or two few times, but it’s too much fun to even think about it! And the last class I took taught me the patience I had to have to make a beautiful necklace like this..
It took me 3 hour-ish to finish. Making all those loops took rather long. But hey, this is how I practise!! Not to mention, deciding which beads should go together isn’t a piece of cake. I am a perfectionist. Everything takes a bit more time..
But in the end, as long as I enjoy it and have fun with it.. I don’t mind!!
